Looking out on the horizon

I’ve had a reproduction of this painting hanging in my office for years…make that decades. As a young woman, I was drawn to it for several reasons:  I love historical paintings and books, I love the impressionistic styling of it, and it reminded me of me. No, I’ve never been tall, blond or slim, but I’ve spent much of my think time looking out to the horizon to see what might be coming, trying to catch a glimpse of what God has in store. I’m fascinated about looking “out there” and imagining what might be. It is when I get the most creative. Lately I’ve found myself sitting back in my chair at my desk and pondering it. It still speaks to me.

It’s our 9th Anniversary this week. July, 2008 we got our incorporation and 501 (c)(3) status. Nine years. So much has happened in that time. None of us saw far enough into the future to see what God was going to do with our commitment to this neighborhood. It seems like forever…and just yesterday.  And it brings us to another one of those pondering moments. What’s out there? What is coming next?  If we look long and hard, what will we see?

In 18 months – and it is going to fly by – I’m going to retire. The Board knows, my family knows, now you know. The Succession Plan has been in the works for almost a year. Sacred Harvest Foundation has been instrumental in helping to craft a workable plan. It’s time. Not just because I’m getting on in years, not because I’ve lost my enthusiasm for this amazing work, not because I can’t see new things out on the horizon. I’m retiring because it’s time to pass the baton. MSH will not be fully successful and sustainable until it can run without me. No, I don’t know who and no, I don’t know how. But I do know it’s time.

My skill set has been maxed out and it’s time for new leadership with a different skill set to take us to the next level. I’m sure I’ll hang around. And I’ll still stand and look out to the horizon. I think God has more things for me to do. And He has more things for MSH to accomplish and more ways for YOU to be involved in this amazing work. Go ahead, stand out on the cliff, shield your eyes from the sun, and take a good hard look. Where will you fit in the next level? There’s so much more to do!!
